This year, Law Week is from April 28th-May 4th, with Law Day officially being celebrated on May 1st. Law Day originated in 1957 when American Bar Association President, Charles Rhyne, envisioned a day for celebrating our nation’s legal system. A year later, President Dwight Eisenhower formally established the first Law Day to mark the nation’s commitment to the rule of law. Then in 1961, Congress issued a joint resolution designating May 1st as the official date for celebrating Law Day, which was subsequently codified in U.S. Code, 36, Section 113. Every president since then has issued an annual Law Day proclamation. In the proclamation, the President usually invites citizens to observe Law Day with appropriate ceremonies. In keeping with that tradition, the Broward Bar will be celebrating Law Day on Thursday, May 3rd by holding our annual Law Day Luncheon at the Renaissance Hotel, 1617 SE 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale beginning at noon.

The theme for Law Day this year is “No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom.” This year’s theme promotes the importance of the courts and their role within our justice system and the importance of ensuring access to justice for all citizens. As we are all aware, continued accessibility to the courts depends on their being adequate funding of the court system. As lawyers, I truly believe we have a duty to continue to support all measures taken
by our legislators to find a sustainable revenue source to support our courts for years to come. We are so fortunate to have as our guest speaker at this year’s luncheon, former Florida Supreme Court Justice Raoul Cantero. Appointed to the Florida Supreme Court in 2002 by then Governor Jeb Bush, Mr. Cantero was the first justice of Hispanic descent and one of the youngest ever to sit on the Court. In his six years as a justice, he heard hundreds of appeals and authored well over 100 majority, concurring and dissenting opinions involving precedent-setting and evolving areas of law. Before his Court appointment, Mr. Cantero was in private practice for 14 years and he is currently the chair of the Miami appellate practice section at the law firm of White and Case. Given his experience on the bench and in private practice, you can be sure his presentation will be informative and thought provoking. We truly hope you will join us as we celebrate this important day. Additional upcoming celebrations include our Annual Meeting and Installation Dinner on June 27th at 5:30p.m.at the Harbor Beach Marriott Resort in Fort Lauderdale. At the dinner we will be installing several new Board members including: Michael Fischler, Jose Izquierdo, Michael Kean, Gary Singer, Jeffrey Solomon, and Laura Varela, along with the other officers and directors of the Board. I want to congratulate all of these individuals on being elected to the 2012-2013 Board and I wish everyone on the Board continued success in the coming year.

I also want to recognize Board member, Denise Jensen, for all of her hard work in putting together a Broward
Bar team to participate in the Autism Speaks walk that took place at Nova Southeastern University on April 14th. The team raised more than $1500 (comprised solely of personal donations) to support this worthy cause and many people participated in the actual walk, including Board members, Bruce Weihe (and his daughter Laura), Anita Paoli, Richard Sachs (and his children Zach and Zoe), Denise Jensen (and many of Denise’s co-workers) and myself, in addition to Art Goldberg, Braulio Rosa, and Louis Reinstein. A little rain could not dampen anyone’s spirit and a good time was had by all who participated. Continued participation in similar community events can only serve to improve the reputation of all lawyers, so I would encourage all of our members to get more involved in local community and charitable organizations.

Additional events that are taking place this month include the West Broward Section Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at the Plantation Preserve Golf Course, 7050 W. Broward Boulevard in Plantation. The cost to attend is $100 per person, which includes lunch, golf, and dinner (you can’t get a better deal anywhere). Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. Proceeds raised will benefit the Seminole Middle School DECAL program. On May 16th, our monthly solo/small firm networking dinner will be taking place at Dave & Busters, 3000 Oakwood Boulevard in Hollywood beginning at 6:00 p.m. The cost to attend is $35.00 for Bar members and $50.00 for non-members. On May 30th, our monthly Bar at the Bar Networking Happy Hour will be taking place at Anthony’s Runway 84 beginning at 5:00p.m. There are also a number of CLE events taking place this month. More information about these events can be found on our website at browardbar.org.

On April 19, 2012, the Broward County Bar Association Young Lawyers Section (YLS) held its annual Elections Meeting/Luncheon. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and congratulate the newly elected 2012-2013 Board. The elected officers are: Meghan Clary, President; Marissa Pullano, President-Elect; Liza Smoker, Treasurer; and Lindsay Corcoran, Secretary. The following eleven (11) Directors were also elected: Sara M. Sandler, Jennifer Hirschberg, Stacy Weissman, Aaron Horowitz, Tobi Lebowitz, Jeffrey M. Wank, Jonathan Stief, Eric S. Rosen, Todd Baker, Kelly M. Vogt, Patrick V. Douglas. I believe that next year’s Board will continue to do a great job and congratulations to you all.

The YLS is excited to host its annual Judicial Reception on Thursday, May 10, 2010 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the New River Rotunda in downtown Fort Lauderdale. This is a very special event as every Judge and General Magistrate in Broward County, as well as the Judges sitting before the Fourth DCA, are hand-delivered a special invitation to this reception in their honor. The deadline to register or sponsor the event is May 3, 2011. Thereafter, you will need to contact the Judicial Reception chairperson, Tobi Lebowitz, at tlebowitz@stearnsweaver.com.

Additionally, on Thursday, May 17, 2017 at noon at the Tower Club, the YLS will host its monthly
luncheon. The topic will be a Pro Bono roundtable discussion moderated by BCBA President, Jordana Goldstein. The luncheon will have 1 CLE credit available. Keep an eye on your e-mail in-box
for details or contact the BCBA office or visit www.browardbar.org to register for this luncheon,
which is $25.00.

Our final event of the year is our annual Family Day, which will be located at Topeekeegee Yugnee (TY) Park on Saturday, June 9, 2012. This year, members of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers professional soccer team will be in attendance to meet, greet and present an exhibition. Everyone is invited to attend this family friendly event and at a cost of $5, you can’t beat it. The price of admission includes food, drinks, some of which will be frozen, in addition to admission to the newly renovated Castaway Island water park. For more information regarding Family Day, please contact chairperson, Jon Stief at jon@haberstief.com or look for the email flyer, which shall be forthcoming.

I look forward to seeing you at our events and thank you for your support of the Young Lawyers Section. This is the best time of year to consider an annual sponsorship, as our fiscal year begins in July. If you have any questions regarding annual or other sponsorship opportunities or if you have any questions regarding the YLS, please feel free to contact me at bart@oslawyers.com.

West Broward Bar Association (WBBA) will host the West Broward Bar Inaugural Golf Classic on Saturday,
May 12, 2012, at the beautiful Plantation Preserve Golf Course and Club in Fort Lauderdale. This partnership between the WBBA and Seminole Middle School will help raise funds to buy computers and materials for the 8th grade law students in the Division of Enhanced Communication and Law (DECAL) program.

The DECAL program is an innovative curriculum for high achieving learners. Students are put through a rigorous curriculum offering up to seven high school credit classes that include speech and debate. A Law
Studies is taught in the 8th grade year in which the students participate in mock trials, interaction with law
professionals, and a trip to the Main Broward Courthouse sponsored by the WBBA. The Seminole Middle School DECAL program is the only active non-magnet middle school government and law program in Broward County.

“With the increased funding cuts to the public schools there is a need to step up and assist those affected in our community,” said Michael Rajtar, President of the WBBA. “This is a perfect pairing of a legal organization and a law program partnering to benefit the next generation.

”The tournament will kick off with registration and lunch at 11:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start 1 p.m. After the tournament, guests will enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by an awards dinner, silent auction, and a raffle. The West Broward County Bar Association is a chapter of the Broward County Bar Association, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1925 to foster courtesy, ethics, and professionalism among lawyers. The organization works to educate the citizens of Broward County on their legal rights and to provide necessary legal services to Broward County’s residents.Tickets are $100 per golfer and several sponsorship levels are available starting at $250.
