Veterans Court Coming to Broward County

Monday, December 5th, 2011

The Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Court of Florida is forming a new division within the circuit. Veterans Court will provide rehabilitative services to veterans struggling with treatable behavioral, mental health and substance abuse issues who come into the court system by way of another division, including drug court, mental health, and domestic violence.

The first planning session was held December 1 in the central courthouse; invitees included members of the Broward county commission, the Veterans’ Administration, the Broward Bar Association, and various other community resources.

Though only in the planning stages now, the Seventeenth Circuit hopes to establish a defined program, ready to implement, in the coming months. “We believe this is an invaluable service to offer the men in women in our community that served us and now need our help,” said Chief Judge Peter Weinstein.

Saturday Pro Se Court Day Will Clear 400 Cases

Friday, December 10th, 2010

Fort Lauderdale, FL – The Seventeenth Judicial Circuit will host Family Pro Se Day on Saturday, December 11, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Main Broward County Courthouse. A pilot program, Family Pro Se Day will give roughly 400 Broward County citizens their day in court, to take care of uncontested divorces and name changes. Judges, Court Administration, Clerk of Courts and Broward Sheriff’s Office staff will all be on hand to ensure litigants have their cases heard, ruled upon, and finalized all on the same day.

Family Pro Se Day is intended as a public service to pro se litigants by having court on Saturday so many don’t have to take time off during the Monday through Friday work week to go to court. Participants who park in the east county parking garage will have their tickets validated in the courthouse.

Chief Judge Tobin, Unified Family Court Administrative Judge Greenhawt, and Trial Court Administrator Carol Lee Ortman, collaborated together to bring the idea of this program to fruition. Depending on the success of the first Family Pro Se Day, the Circuit may schedule similar events in the future.
