Bloggers Breakfast with Leading Reporters, 5/6

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Respected journalists will give BCBA bloggers the inside scoop on how to write timely and informative blog posts that will keep your readers coming back for more. Mark your calendar!

Buddy Nevins, Broward Beat

Buddy Nevins is a New York City native who has been a journalist for over 40 years. He was the Sun-Sentinel’s Miami bureau chief for 7 years — assigning, editing and organizing all coverage in Miami-Dade County.

Mr. Nevins covered many of the important events in south Florida during the past four decades, and now runs the website www.Browardbeat.com, which features breaking news and analysis of local government and politics.

Dan Christensen, BrowardBullDog.com

Dan is an award-winning former investigative reporter for The Miami Herald and Daily Business Review, and one of South Florida’s most experienced reporters. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in political science from the University of Miami.

After nearly 30 years as an investigative reporter, Christensen was let go from the Miami Herald in the second quarter of 2009 because of budget cuts. He founded the Browardbulldog.org shortly afterward. The Bulldog is an independent, not for profit online-only newspaper created to provide authoritative local reporting in the public interest.

Margaret Grisdela of Legal Expert Connections will serve as moderator. Robin Moselle of Jacobson, Sobo & Moselle will make the introductions.

About our esteemed speaker, Robert A. “Bob” Butterworth

As Florida’s Attorney General, Robert A. “Bob” Butterworth received national recognition for his success in enforcing victim and consumer protection, environmental, civil rights and antitrust laws. He was a leader in the multi-state litigation against the tobacco industry, bringing $11 billion to the state, and was voted the top Attorney General in the nation by his peers. In addition to his leadership in the multi-state litigation against the tobacco industry, he was responsible for the passage of numerous Florida statutes and was the impetus behind amendments to Florida’s Constitution expanding open government to all three branches of government and reforming the state’s antiquated Cabinet system.

As Secretary of the Florida Department of Children and Families, Butterworth made substantial improvements to the troubled department’s operations, and successfully closed more than 229 cases involving litigation and appeals.

Twice, governors have called on Butterworth to serve as a troubleshooter: Once, to head the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the parent agency of the Florida Highway Patrol, to reform that police force and implement diversity into its ranks, and, again, to serve as interim mayor of a South Florida city plagued by political corruption. In addition, Butterworth has served as a county judge, circuit judge, prosecutor and Broward County sheriff. He is an attorney with Atkinson, Diner, Stone, Mankuta & Ploucha, P.A.
